International Booker Prize 2024: Hwang Sok-yong's "Mater 2-10" Shortlisted

Renowned South Korean Author Competing for Prestigious Literary Award

London, UK

The International Booker Prize has announced its shortlist for 2024, and among the contenders is South Korean novelist Hwang Sok-yong's "Mater 2-10." The prestigious literary award recognizes excellence in fiction translated into English from around the world.

Hwang's novel explores themes of motherhood, identity, and social justice. Set in both North and South Korea, "Mater 2-10" follows the lives of two women: an elderly mother who was separated from her children during the Korean War and a young North Korean defector who becomes a surrogate for a wealthy South Korean family.

Hwang, a prolific writer and human rights activist, is known for his socially conscious and critically acclaimed works. His novel "The Guest" won the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2006. "Mater 2-10" is his first novel to be shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.

The winner of the International Booker Prize 2024 will be announced in May. Hwang faces competition from authors from around the globe, including Susan Choi ("Trust Exercise"), Fernanda Melchor ("Hurricane Season"), and Marieke Lucas Rijneveld ("The Discomfort of Evening").
